1.4 | Does Your Brand Feel Stale? Here's What Might Be Wrong

“My brand feels stale.” “My website is outdated.” “I've kind of frankensteined the whole thing.”

I've heard some version of these sentences on more first calls than I can count.

Usually from women running established businesses who are perfectly capable of explaining everything else about what they do. But when it comes to their brand or website, all they can really say is that something feels off.

And here's the problem: “It feels stale” describes a feeling, not something a designer can actually fix.

In this episode of Name Brand, we're talking about what that feeling might be telling you, why small design updates often don't solve it, and how to figure out what actually needs to change before investing in a rebrand or website redesign.

Your brand might be representing a business you've outgrown

When someone tells me their brand feels outdated, the problem often isn't the design itself.

It's that their business has changed, but their branding and website haven't kept up.

Maybe you're still leading with the service you built your business around, even though it's no longer the work you want to book.

Maybe your prices have increased, but your website still communicates the same positioning it did three years ago.

Or maybe you're speaking to an audience you've outgrown, explaining things your ideal clients already understand.

None of these problems is necessarily going to disappear because you choose a new font or refresh your color palette.

Because the bigger issue isn't always how your brand looks.

It's what your brand is communicating about the business you run today.

Why a quick website refresh doesn't always work

It's tempting to start with the easy stuff.

Change the fonts. Update the photography. Rewrite your About page on a Sunday afternoon. Add another section to explain the service you've recently introduced.

And sometimes those updates are exactly what you need.

But if your website is still organized around an old version of your business, you're making cosmetic changes to something that needs a more fundamental decision.

Over time, this is how websites become a collection of services, pages, and messaging from different stages of a business.

Everything might have made sense when you added it.

That doesn't mean it all belongs there now.

What we're talking about in this episode

We're breaking down what it actually means when your brand feels stale, including:

  • The three things “outdated” might really mean: Your website is promoting an old service, signaling an old price point, or speaking to an old audience.

  • Why small design fixes don't always last: How changing the appearance of your website can leave the underlying messaging problem untouched.

  • The problem with constantly adding to your website: Why more pages, services, and information don't necessarily make your business easier to understand.

  • How to explain what needs to change: A simple sentence that turns “something feels off” into a useful starting point for a designer, copywriter, or strategist.

  • When you might not need a rebrand at all: Because sometimes you're just tired of looking at your own website, and that's a different problem.

I also share a quick exercise to help you identify whether your business has genuinely outgrown its current branding.

Listen to Episode 4 of Name Brand

If you've been thinking about updating your brand or redesigning your website but can't quite explain why, listen to this episode before you start making changes.

Here's the question I want you to consider:

My website was built when I was ______, and now I'm ______.

If those two answers describe very different businesses, you've probably found a much better starting point than “I need something fresh.”

And if you need help figuring out what this version of your business should be known for before making design decisions, that's exactly the kind of work we do at Sunday Muse Design®.
